National Science Foundation
The National Science Foundation is a United States government agency that supports fundamental research and education in all the non-medical fields of science and engineering. NSF provides funding through seven directorates and four cross-cutting programs.
National Institutes of Health
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the primary agency of the United States government responsible for biomedical and public health research. The NIH comprises 27 separate institutes and centers of different biomedical disciplines.
Department of Energy
DOE is concerned with the United States' policies regarding energy and nuclear material. DOE sponsors more research in the physical sciences than any other U.S. federal agency, and includes the National Laboratories.
Department of Defense
DOD funds basic and applied research, along with advanced technology development through a variety of programs. DOD also encompasses funding from sub-agencies such as the Office of Naval Research, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Army Research Office, and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
Department of Education
The Department of Education funds research to evaluate and improve the quality of US schools. IES is the independent, non-partisan statistics, research, and evaluation arm, and provides scientific evidence on which to ground education practice and policy and to share this information with educators, policymakers, and the public.
Environmental Protection Agency
EPA is one of the world’s leading environmental and human health research organizations. Research interests include air and water quality, pollution, climate change, health, and ecosystems.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
NASA is an independent agency of the U.S. Federal Government responsible for the civilian space program, as well as aeronautics and space research.
National Endowment for the Arts
The National Endowment for the Arts is an independent federal agency that funds, promotes, and strengthens the creative capacity of our communities by providing diverse opportunities for arts participation.
National Endowment for the Humanities
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is one of the largest funders of humanities programs in the United States. NEH grants typically go to cultural institutions, museums, archives, libraries, colleges, universities, public television, and radio stations, and individual scholars.
