Fall Federal Relations Update Session

Workshop Overview

Over the several few weeks, final decisions will be made on Capitol Hill regarding FY 2018 funding allocations for federal agencies and programs. Elsewhere in Washington, the administration will continue work on its budget proposal for FY 2019.

This session will provide insight on the overall federal policy landscape, the latest congressional appropriations numbers for agencies and programs of interest to the FSU community, an early look at the expected FY 2019 budget, and updates on other relevant policy developments. Instructions will be shared on the process for submitting an item for consideration for inclusion in the FSU Fiscal Year 2019 Federal Agenda. Attendees are encouraged to bring questions and concerns to this session.

Presenter Bio

Jonathan Nurse

Jonathan Nurse serves as Director of Federal Relations for Florida State University. He works with the FSU community, Congress, and federal agencies to bolster support for the University’s research activities and other priorities. He also collaborates with universities from across the nation on policy matters of shared interest.

Prior to joining the FSU Office of Research, Jonathan served as Director of Government Relations for the Infectious Diseases Society of America where he represented more than 10,000 physicians, scientists, and other health care professionals dedicated to excellence in patient care, prevention, public health, education, and research related to infectious diseases. He was instrumental in securing new funding in Fiscal Year 2016 to implement the National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria and advancing the antibiotic research and development components of the 21st Century Cures Act that was signed into law in 2016. 

Jonathan also served as Assistant Director of Federal Relations for the University of Washington and has experience in the private sector, working for federal affairs firms that specialized in higher education and local government development. Jonathan holds a BA and MPP from The George Washington University and was raised in New Jersey.
