Biomaterials
Biological and biocompatible materials exhibit a variety of unique properties that enable biological functions. For instance, biological molecules such as DNA, Protein and phospholipids work together carry out functions ranging from self-replication to photosynthesis. An understanding of natural biomaterials allows one to better interact with biological systems and even create semi-synthetic or entirely synthetic materials capable of interfacing with living systems. Applications being investigated at FSU include medical implants, tissue engineering and biological sensors.
